Why we are doing it.
We visited the remote Nuba Mountains.
There we found a mud hut filled with smartly dressed young men.
A school. Two of the youths put up their hands and asked
if they could speak. Funds for the school were running out and they wanted to know when their school was going to close.
They wanted an exact date.
Their education matters to them more then we can imagine.
How to make it happen…
The former DG of the BBC, Greg Dyke, coined this memorable phrase. “Cut the crap and make it happen”. It’s not about cutting corners. The correct procedures must and will be followed. It is more about keeping it simple. Getting out there. Telling people the story and asking for their help.
Our plan is for several fundraising “events” coupled with a sponsoring scheme to encourage regular giving and give the school the confidence to know that we will continue to support it year after year.
We believe everyone has the right to an education…
The Sudan is arguably the most educationally needy place in today’s world.
Only 2% of the population in Southern Sudan have completed their primary school education.
Literacy levels are estimated at between 10 and 15%.
This is the legacy of a 21-year civil war.
Grace Secondary School will be open to young men and women from both Christian and Muslim backgrounds. It will also serve as a place for adult education, and a clinic. One priority will be HIV/AIDS awareness - for a community cut off from the outside world for two decades, where many do not know about the disease and where many more are returning home from countries badly affected. Grace will be a boarding school - this will be especially important for girls who often have to work at home and can be married as early as 14 years old.
There is so much we can do. Please join us.
Imagine the difference we can make…
Since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in 2005 there has been fresh hope.
The desire for literacy and education is so strong that we simply can’t miss the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of these young people. After all, they are the future of the Sudan.
