

Sophia Grech
Renowned mezzo Sophia Grech graduated from the RCM in 1995 and is now enjoying a busy International career. Travelling extensively she has gained considerable acclaim; which had lead to a number of prizes, awards and recordings. In 1999 she was nominated for the Daily Express Young Achievers Award and in 2002 she was presented a medal by the Spanish Government for her contribution to Spanish classical song.
To date she has given over two hundred recitals in leading concert halls and prestigious festivals across the UK, Spain, Gibraltar, Malta, France, Czech Republic, Canada, USA and China; amongst which: English Music Festival, Liszt International Festival (USA), Great Romantics Festival (Canada), Prague Spring Festival, Barcelona International Festival, Malta National Festival ….
Sophia has appeared as a principle with various opera companies including The Royal Opera and the Maltese National Theatre Opera. Roles include 'Sadie’ in ’Timepiece, ’Il Gara’ in ’Il Wheda’ and ’Mercedees’ in ‘Carmen’ . She has also appeared as a soloist with a number of orchestras across the world, her favourite work is Elgar’s ‘Sea Pictures’, performances include, The National Symphony Orchestra of Bulgaria, Transylvanian Philharmonic Orchestra, The Maltese National Orchestra, The Russian National State TV and Radio Symphony Orchestra, Malaga Symphony Orchestra, The London Chamber Ensemble, and Stowe Opera Orchestra.
Sophia also has Maltese roots and is a duel National; she has been busy in Malta giving concerts as well as television and radio interviews since the successful release of her solo CD. Performances include a galaat the National Theatre with the National Orchestra which was broadcast on television, Mozart’s ‘Coronation Mass’ with the Maltese National Orchestra and recitals at the Malta International Arts Festival with pianist Eleonora Bekova. Sophia was recently invited to give a concert for the President of Malta at his palace in San Anton."Sophia has the ability to move with great ease from a meditative to a festive mood, from a prayer to a protest, she establishes a warm rapport with the audience from the moment she takes the stage". - The Times, Malta. Most recent performances have included a recital tour in the USA with trumpeter John Holt, which included Texas, St. Louis, Memphis, Oklahoma and Boston, Mahler’s '4th Symphony' with DCO, Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ with the Oxford Harmonic Society at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford and Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ at Hanover Square London, which was introduced by Dame Judy Dench. Sophia recently recorded for Crystal Records in the USA with trumpeter John Holt (works by American composers, due for release 09) Other Recordings include her solo CD ‘The Masters of Song’, released in Spain in 1998,“Sophia has a lovely overall colour to her voice and a strong projection through out a considerable range, an excellent artist". – Decca Records, and her Maltese CD ‘Mal- Kant- Tal-Bahar’, by Camilleri, released in Malta in 2004. Sophia was recently invited to sing at London’s annual charity event 'The Story of Christmas', supported by Westminster Cathedral Choir and alongside a host of famous actors including Aled Jones, Lesley Philips and Geoffrey Palmer.
Sophia is regularly invited to give masterclasses at Universities and Music Colleges, in the UK, Spain, Malta, USA, and Canada.
Sophia was regularly coached by Robert Sutherland, coach and pianist to Maria Callas.
